Synopsis

Vanni and Natalia are an elderly couple who have taken care of their own mothers and now wonder about their advancing old age and who will take care of them. Vasilica is a 45 year-old Romanian woman who works as a caregiver for Miranda, a woman over ninety with dementia, providing care 24h a day. Vasilica left her life and young children in Romania 15 years ago when she moved to Italy, and now she no longer knows her place in the world. In the Villa Antonietta Retirement Home, the lives of the healthcare assistants, mostly young foreign girls like Marienne, and the residents, well-to-do ladies from Milan, unfold amidst the challenges of rising and going to bed, feeding and changing diapers, and navigating smiles and conflicts. In a small village in Sardinia, Sandra and her friends have chosen to live their old age together in a community, with the desire to find an alternative way of care.
Four stories, four tales of care, come together in a surreal car journey through the Po River valley. In each chapter, one of the protagonists joins the colorful group in search of an answer to the overarching question that drives the entire narrative: "What kind of care awaits us?" Amidst stops and hitchhikes, forks and dead ends, the roads become muddled and the destination remains a mirage. All that is left is to continue the journey.
